Elementary and Middle School Students – Week 4

July 19 – July 23

List of open programs:

CSI (Crime Scene Investigation)

Become a Super Science Sleuth! Learn about forensics, crime scene investigations, and crime lab chemistry as you perform experiments designed to show you just how those tricky cases are solved. Search for evidence, gather clues, and discover how science can help solve a mystery! Dust for and classify fingerprints, analyze hand writing, test for blood type and DNA using simulated blood, and use “Glow Blood” to see where humans can’t see. Examine hair and clothing fibers, practice chemistry to identify mystery substances, and much more. All students will receive a crime lab kit & mini microscope.  (For 3rd-5th grade students)

Prerequisite Courses:

Gear and Pulley Explorations

Gear up for some amazing science fun! What happens when gears are connected?  Build, tinker, and create amazing gadgets. Conquer different levels of challenges and have fun learning! We’ll design and build a wide range of gadgets, inventive machines, crazy contraptions, and more.  Projects include: The Wooden Coaster Challenge, Magnificent Marble Machine, and a host of other fun contests designed to bring out the engineer in you! (For 3rd-5th grade students)

Prerequisite Courses:

Introduction to Songwriting

Create your own melodies and turn your thoughts, ideas and feelings into lyrics. This course explores melody, harmony, rhythm, lyric writing, and the components (verse, chorus, bridge etc.) that provide the structures of songwriting. Also participants will learn to work both collaboratively and independently through the creative process.  (For 6th-8th grade students)

Prerequisite Courses:

Junior Physicians & Squishy Circuits

This in-person course will be held in Ender Hall at Bergen Community College, 400 Paramus Road, Paramus NJ 07652

What’s it like to journey through the human body? We will explore each of the biological systems through hands-on experimentation. Activities include simulated blood typing, making Mr. Skeleton, making a map of the human tongue, a model heart, brain, and more.  Next, have fun using conductive and insulating play dough to learn about the basics of  electric circuits!  Use these ‘Squishy circuits’ to solve problems, engineer solutions and inspire your creativity and thinking.  We’ll build creative gadgets with buzzers, motors, LEDs, and more! Take home a unique circuit alarm designed & built (by you!) in class. (For 3rd-5th grade students)

Prerequisite Courses:

Mini Robotics: Sphero, Ozobot, and BristleBots

Have fun experimenting with mini robots from the privacy of your home! Coding, robotics, art, STEAM, and computer science will come alive with tiny, programmable mini-robots. Learn to use the Sphero mini app to drive in different modes, program with Javascript, or as a controller to play games. Our instruction will help you to really have fun and learn with your robot. Then have fun using toothbrush motor and vibration technology to build and take home your own “Bristlebot! and Brushbot.” (For 3rd-5th grade students)

Prerequisite Courses:

MiniBots & Super Science Make & Take

This in-person course will be held in Ender Hall at Bergen Community College, 400 Paramus Road, Paramus NJ 07652

Coding, robotics, art, STEAM, and computer science will come alive with tiny, programmable mini-robots. Use toothbrush motor and vibration technology to build and take home your own “Bristlebot! and Brushbot.”  Next, perform science experiments you can take home! Make your own working telescope as you learn about the optics of light. Construct an electro-magnet and a working electric motor, make ultra-violet bead bracelets, and much more!  (For 3rd-5th grade students)

Prerequisite Courses:

Mock Trial

This in-person course will be held in Ender Hall at Bergen Community College, 400 Paramus Road, Paramus NJ 07652

Guilty or innocent? In this class, students will learn the elements of public speaking, principles of the court system, and how to debate the pro and con side of an issue. Students will serve as either a member of the prosecution, the defense, a witness, or a judge. At the end of the class a jury of your peers will deliberate and decide the fate of the accused. (For 6th-8th grade students)

Practice Spanish through fun interactive activities and games. Our daily focus will include conversations through greetings and vocabulary strengthening through skits, songs and games. Test your knowledge with our daily activity challenge. (For 3rd-5th grade students)

Prerequisite Courses:

Super Science Make & Take - Toys that Teach

Would you like to design and build a homemade musical instrument?  How about making your own working telescope as you learn about the optics of light?  Or, perhaps, constructing an adjustable, ball-launching catapult that changes the trajectory of a flinging projectile?!  In this workshop, you’ll construct a wide variety of inventive projects and toys that are designed to teach about science concepts.  From assembling an electro-magnet and a working electric motor to making ultra-violet bead bracelets, fun is what this workshop is all about! (For 3rd-5th grade students)
