Summer Learning Academy – Week 5

July 29 – August 2     

A Week of Battles with Chef it up 2 Go Grades 1 - 5

Every day of the week we will have a different themed battle such as Cupcake Battle, Spot On Battle, Chopped and more. We will break the groups into teams and explain the rules of the day to battle it out! Our Chef It Up leaders may make things more interesting by taking away a much-needed utensil or adding an extra ingredient… you won’t know what to expect! Peanut and Tree Nut Free. 

After Care

After Care runs from 4PM – 5:30PM

At the end of your child’s daily program, your child may remain on the BCC campus to participate in supervised activities until 5:30 p.m. Your child may enroll in any or all of the weeks during which your child is attending a program. Participants are not permitted to stay on campus following the end of their regularly scheduled day without authorized supervision. A LATE FEE of $50/hour will be charged if the child is not picked up by 5:30 pm.

Amazing College Essays Grades 9 - 12

This course focuses on equipping students with the essential skills needed to craft compelling and effective college-level essays. Through in-depth exploration of essay structures, research methodologies, and critical writing techniques, participants learn to articulate their ideas with clarity and depth. By receiving guidance on thesis development, argumentation, and refinement of writing style, students gain confidence in their ability to produce impactful essays tailored for college applications and academic pursuits. 

Architecture and Engineering Challenges

Week 2: Grades 2 – 6; Week 3: Grades 5 – 8; Week 5: Grades 2 – 6; Week 6: Grades 5 – 8 runs 1PM – 4PM  

Architecture and engineering are the focus of this program. You will work to design and build towers, balsa bridges and a wide array of Lego and K’nex™ architecture projects. Have fun building famous architectural designs from around the world including Adam Tucker Reed’s famous brick structures including the Empire State Building, Imperial Hotel, Whitehouse, Flat Iron Building, Seattle Space Needle, and more. You will also build bridges, towers, and other structures using a variety of materials, and learn about structural engineering principles and forces that act on structures. Develop science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills in a fun, hands-on environment.

Before Care

Before Care runs from 7:30AM – 9AM

BCC’s staff ensures your child’s prompt check-in at their regularly scheduled programs. Your child may enroll in any or all of the weeks during which your child is attending a program.

Bricks 4 Kidz Master Challenge Grades 1 - 6

Each day brings exciting new challenges, where campers will learn advanced LEGO techniques, collaborate on imaginative projects, and test their creativity. From constructing towering structures to engineering moving creations, it’s a journey of innovation, teamwork, and endless fun. Camera Phone Photography Grades 6 - 8

Runs 9AM – 12PM in Week 2 and Week 5 

Almost everyone has an iPhone or Android camera and takes photos. This course teaches the fundamentals for making digital photos better. Learn the basics of composition and personal expression using creative camera settings and free apps that can be downloaded to a smart phone. Learn the functions smart cameras can do—framing the subject and the scene, portrait photography, stopping motion or blurring action using apertures and shutter speeds. We will use the Bergen Community campus and fellow students to capture imagery. We will work with Adobe Lightroom to crop and adjust exposures, learn from each other through group discussions, and make prints of our images. An iPhone or Android smart phone is required for this class. Basic computer and mouse skills are required.

Chemical Wizardry

Week 4: Grades 1 – 5 runs from 9AM – 12PM; Week 5: Grades 1 – 5 runs from 9AM – 12PM; Week 5: Grades 5 – 7 runs from 1PM – 4PM  

Our favorite experiments combined into one super class of science! Get ready for a fun-filled “magical” laboratory experience Harry Potter style! This class is an introduction to the science of chemistry and physics. In addition to learning about atoms, bonding, and the periodic table, you will enjoy making Flubber, Silly Putty, Super Hi- Bounce balls, and more. Have fun making play dough, Glowing Goo, and even a tie-dye style shirt. We will create atomic worm polymers and lava lamp-like blobs. We will also demonstrate the Big Bang Cannon, diet Coke and Mentos Geyser, Magic Genie in the bottle, and more. Most projects will be taken home along with a recipe booklet and mini chemistry kit!

How to Write a Research Paper Grades 6 - 8

This course guides students through the process of creating and presenting effective research projects. From topic selection and gathering information to organizing findings and presenting conclusions, students learn essential research skills. Through practical exercises and guidance on presentation techniques, participants develop the ability to articulate their research cohesively, fostering confidence in both research endeavors and public speaking. 

Intermediate Guitar Grades 7 - 11

2 week course

This intermediate course builds on the basics that a guitar player with some experience needs to hone (See Beginner’s Guitar and Beginner’s Guitar II). Students will enhance their playing skills such as picking and strumming, and practice scales and chords in the context of the songs they enjoy. Students must have their own guitars. 

Journey with Sharks Grades 1 - 6

Embark on an underwater adventure with Journey with Sharks, where Shark Week comes to life through LEGO building! This camp blends the thrill of shark exploration with the joy of LEGO-building. Aspiring Shark Biologists will construct LEGO models of various sharks, from the mighty Great White to the legendary Megalodon, and learn about their fascinating habitats. Dive into a week of creating motorized sharks, intricate sea life mosaics, and discovering the wonders of the deep blue. Sign up now for a splash of education and a wave of fun! 

LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0 Grades 1 - 4

Come explore the world of Robotics using Lego Education WeDo equipment. Make motorized devices that relate to moving mechanisms using Legos and computer software! No prior experience required.

Mini Drones and Flying Physics Grades 3 - 5

Week 2: Runs 1PM – 4PM; Week 4: Runs 9AM – 12PM; Week 5: Runs 9AM – 12PM

Take to the skies with mini drones, quadcopters, and more! This camp is the perfect introduction to the world of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In this camp, safety is a priority as students learn to fly in first-person view (FPV), exploring the real-world applications of drones. Putting critical thinking to the test, campers will brainstorm ways drones could be used for good, sketching out their ideas for new and innovative drones and drone uses. Campers will also experiment with paper planes, flying gadgets, rockets, gyroscopes, physics toys, balloon cars, and much more. All students will take home their own mini-drone.

Model United Nations Grades 6 - 9

Become one of the 400,000 students around the world in Model United Nations! Assume the role of an ambassador and represent your country to solve current world issues. Throughout the week students will research a world problem, develop solutions, and negotiate consensus with their peers. This program teaches teens and tweens core skills such as research, writing, public speaking, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. Model UN alumni have gone on to become Supreme Court justices, world leaders, lawyers, and business professionals. No prior experience is needed. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. 

Racing Games with Unity Grades 3 - 6

On your marks, get set, create! Blast off in making your first 3D Mario Kart® and Crash Team Racing® style game! Design your own tracks and customize your karts and characters. Using Unity, a professional 3D game development software, students will combine their creations into their own kart racing game that they can play with friends and family at home. Students can participate in Esports League races against other schools across the country with a chance to have their tracks featured in the Black Rocket master build of the game! Student projects will be available on a password-protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Student-created games will be available on a password-protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Spanish Songs, Skits and Games for Kids Grades 1 - 6

Practice Spanish through role play and emerge yourself in the character using props. Sing along to the many catchy songs that aim to help you practice and learn Spanish vocabulary. And join us in the fun by playing our many culturally based games. This class will teach you Spanish culture and language acquisition in a fun and creative way!
