Summer Learning Academy – Week 6

August 5 – August 9       

After Care

After Care runs from 4PM – 5:30PM

At the end of your child’s daily program, your child may remain on the BCC campus to participate in supervised activities until 5:30 p.m. Your child may enroll in any or all of the weeks during which your child is attending a program. Participants are not permitted to stay on campus following the end of their regularly scheduled day without authorized supervision. A LATE FEE of $50/hour will be charged if the child is not picked up by 5:30 pm.

Architecture and Engineering Challenges

Week 2: Grades 2 – 6; Week 3: Grades 5 – 8; Week 5: Grades 2 – 6; Week 6: Grades 5 – 8 runs 1PM – 4PM  

Architecture and engineering are the focus of this program. You will work to design and build towers, balsa bridges and a wide array of Lego and K’nex™ architecture projects. Have fun building famous architectural designs from around the world including Adam Tucker Reed’s famous brick structures including the Empire State Building, Imperial Hotel, Whitehouse, Flat Iron Building, Seattle Space Needle, and more. You will also build bridges, towers, and other structures using a variety of materials, and learn about structural engineering principles and forces that act on structures. Develop science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills in a fun, hands-on environment.

Babysitting Basics with CPR Grades 6 - 8

Offered on Week 4, Friday 7/26 and Week 6, Friday 8/9

Babysitting Training is provided by the American Red Cross and is designed for young people to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care to infants and children in a residential setting. Students learn about basic child- care and basic first aid. Participants receive a certificate of completion. The class runs for one day only on Friday 7/26 and Friday 8/9 from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Before Care runs from 7:30AM – 9AM

Code Breakers Grades 3 - 6

Calling all future coders, programmers, & designers! Learn the basics of coding languages like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS through a series of web projects and design challenges each day and be on your way to becoming the next tech star! Whether you want to be a Silicon Valley CEO or the high school student who just made $1 million dollars for programming in her bedroom, this course has the essentials you need to begin your journey. Projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years.

Calling all future coders, programmers, & designers! Learn the basics of coding languages like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS through a series of web projects and design challenges each day and be on your way to becoming the next tech star! DSLR Photography Grades 9 - 12

Do you have a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera that you want to learn more about? Do you only use the “P-program setting” and wonder what all the other settings do? Learn how to use these cameras in a variety of modes—including Aperture, Shutter speed and the manual settings. Go further with Manual setting and learn to make more creative images—such as stop motion, blur backgrounds, portrait Bokeh effects and more. A DSLR camera, camera manual, and a card reader and/or cables to download images from your camera are required. Basic computer and mouse skills are also required. 

Fun with Physics Grades 4 - 7

Week 3: runs from 9AM – 12PM 
Week 6: runs from 9AM – 12PM 

Get ready to learn science concepts in a fun and unique style. Campers will perform magical physics demonstrations involving Newton’s laws of motion, electricity, air pressure, ultraviolet light, optics, and much more. Students will build a solar-powered car; experiment with spinning tops, gyroscopic motion, discover principles of flight, construct a working fountain, catapult, and much more. Campers will take home solar-powered cars, and many of the projects made in class. 

Holidays In the Summer Grades 1 - 5

Our Junior Chefs will be creating some of our Holiday Favorites to enjoy in class and some to bring home to enjoy with their families/friends. We will make Apple Cider Donuts, Stuffing Bites, Red/White/Blue Shakes or Parfaits and even a Summer Getaway Gingerbread house on the beach…how fun!! Peanut and Tree Nut Free. 

I ♥ Writing

Grades 3 – 5 runs from 9AM – 12PM in Week 2 and Grades 6 – 8 runs from 9AM – 12PM in Week 6

Make your love of writing come to life by revealing the writer within you! Learn a combination of skills that will assist you in finding your voice in your own writing. Learn the building blocks of great writing, good word choice, key techniques and terms including the four types of genres: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama. Practice using imagery, point of view, mood, metaphors, and many more literary terms. Topics are developed according to students’ interests.

Intro to Algebra Grades 6 - 8

This summer prepare for your success in Pre-Algebra and Algebra, and beyond! Learn about the tools and practice the skills for success. We will be working with number theory, variables, number sense, basic arithmetic, and vocabulary.

Intro to Geometry Grades 6 - 8

In this class you will be learning basic geometry concepts including properties of angles, triangles and transformations, as well as area and volume.

Lightroom Photography Retouching Grades 9 - 12

Make your image stand out by learning the basics of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. Bring some of your favorite images to edit/modify. Learn the basic image editing process and transform, enhance, and compose your photos. Photoshop Lightroom can be used to crop, color balance, eliminate background items, sharpen contrast, add creative filters and more. Basic computer and mouse skills are required. 

Minecraft Modders Grades 3 - 6

Customize your own Minecraft world and mod the classic game in this one-of-a-kind class. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mods. Students will create a wide variety of new elements, gameplay mechanics, and world generating mods to change the way you play Minecraft. Projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family.

Mini-Bots, Battle-Bots & Robotic Fun Grades 1 – 6

Have fun building and creating using your imagination. Campers will construct a wide range of robot projects throughout the week.  Projects will include constructing a Battle-Bot from our huge Robot modular collection, participating in our robot tug-o’ war, Olympic competition, soccer match, giant ramp race, Mission to Mars Robot Challenge, and more.  Campers will learn engineering principles in a fun, hands-on atmosphere.  (Additional exploration will take place with several other types of robots that allow for fun robotic exploration and coding! We will explore with NEW Sphero RVR robots, Bolt, Ozobot, Botley, and more.) All students will take home a robot as part of this camp. 

Mock Trial Grades 6 - 8

Mock Trial Grades 6 – 8 runs from 9AM – 4PM in Week 2 and again in Week 6 from 9AM – 4PM

Guilty or innocent? In this class, students will learn the elements of public speaking, principles of the court system, and how to debate the pro and con side of an issue. Students will serve as either a member of the prosecution, the defense, a witness, or a judge. At the end of the class a jury of your peers will deliberate and decide the fate of the accused. 

Nonfiction Memoir Writing Grades 5 - 8

In this course budding writers explore the art of crafting compelling nonfiction memoirs. Through engaging prompts and exercises, students learn to recount personal experiences with vivid detail and emotional depth. By understanding the elements of storytelling within real-life narratives, participants develop the skills to capture their unique stories, fostering a deeper appreciation for the power of personal storytelling at a young age. 

Public Speaking and Speech Writing for Kids Grades 8 - 12

This empowering course focuses on honing the art of public speaking and crafting impactful speeches. Through interactive exercises, students learn the principles of effective communication, including body language, vocal modulation, and persuasive speech writing. With practical opportunities to deliver speeches and receive constructive feedback, participants develop confidence and essential skills to express their ideas eloquently and persuasively in various public settings. 

Summer Reading

Grades 3 – 5 runs 1PM – 4PM in Week 2 and Grades 6 – 8 runs 1PM – 4PM in Week 6

Do you want to get your summer reading and reading work finished quickly? Then this is the class for you! Bring your school’s approved novel and any assigned work that goes along with it. We will create a reading plan for the week to ensure that you will finish reading your summer reading book quickly and effectively! You will be taught different reading strategies throughout the week to help you become a better reader and to avoid the “summer slide.”

World of Wizards Grades 1 - 6

Step into the World of Wizards with Bricks 4 Kidz, where the enchanting worlds of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts come alive through LEGO building! Young Investors and Entrepreneurs Grades 6 - 9

  • Week 1 from 9AM – 12PM 
  • Week 6 from 1PM – 4PM

This class teaches kids the secrets of building financial wealth and security! Whether you want to build the next great American company, become a Wall Street tycoon, or be the millionaire next door by investing wisely – this camp is for you! In this course you will learn the basics of investing in the stock market, the difference between assets and liabilities, the importance of diversification, and how to evaluate companies. You will also develop your own business plan and present your ideas to your peers to compete for their investments in a mock Shark Tank style activity.
