Animal control officers enforce animal licensing laws and regulations. Animal control officers are generally employed by a county or the federal government and require handling all kinds of animals from pets to wildlife. This is your opportunity to begin a career as a paid municipal officer or as a volunteer working with animals as a part of a rescue group, shelter, or other animal welfare organization. Topics include:
- Capturing and impounding dangerous or stray animals
- Investigating cases of animal cruelty
- Enforcing licensing laws and other state, county, and city laws and regulations of that are applicable to the animal control program
- Providing expert testimony in court cases
- Rescuing trapped animals

This course explores the basics of conducting an investigation including: types of investigations, crime and security in the U.S., interviewing and interrogating and much more. Topics include foundations of investigations, sources of Information, background and due diligence, skip tracing, insurance investigation, surveillance, report writing, case file management, the art of interviewing, interrogation, Taking Statements, Legal Investigation, Criminal Investigations, Criminal Defense Investigations, Fraud Investigations & Ethics.
Bergen Community College works closely with both the New Jersey Licensed Private Investigators Association, Inc. and AISI International (American Investigation Security International) to facilitate employment opportunities for our graduates. It is our goal to assist our student’s placement in this fast growing and professional career.
Total Program Hours: 100 hours
Eligibility:: Must have at least five (5) years of experience as an investigator or police officer with a local or state police department or with an investigative agency for a county, city, state or federal organization.
Credential: New Jersey Private Detective License
In the State of New Jersey it is mandatory for a Security Officer to be certified in S.O.R.A (Security Officer Registration Act). This course provides extensive training on security topics that are essential for you to effectively perform your duties as a professional security officer. Individuals receive a SORA license after completing the approved training program and passing the certification exam.
Total Program Hours: 24 hours
All SORA security officers must complete a one-day refresher course prior to their expiration date. You can attend this course up to 60-days prior to the expiration date. This one day refresher course covers First Aid, Use of Force, Ethics, Theft Prevention and New Terrorism Awareness.
