This course provides the foundational knowledge and skills required to become a New Jersey Elevator Subcode Official. It is designed to meet the educational requirements of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs. The curriculum focuses on the practical application of elevator codes, primarily based on the ASME A17.1-2019 standard and other essential reference books.

Topics covered include:

• Code Application: Reading, understanding, and applying elevator codes to various situations.
• Inspection Procedures: The roles and responsibilities of an inspector, including witnessing one- and five-year tests, and final acceptance tests.
• Problem Resolution: How to handle elevator complaints, investigate accidents, and determine elevator safety.
• Administrative Requirements: An overview of the administrative responsibilities of a subcode official, which are further detailed in the mandatory 45-hour Subcode Official class that follows this course.
• Ethics and Professionalism: The importance of maintaining integrity and making sound, code-based decisions.

Note: This course is a prerequisite for the Subcode Official class, which is a mandatory step toward obtaining the license. A total of 11 years of industry experience is required, as the state does not count four years of an apprenticeship towards the seven-year experience requirement. All necessary books and supplies will be distributed early in the course.

The 90-hour Elevator Inspector HHS (High rise and Hazardous Structure) course provides students the fundamental knowledge and educational experience required by the state for licensure under this title.  Textbooks, materials, ID card and exam fees are not included, course texts are located in the college library for student use.

Prerequisites:  Seven Years Related Experience in the Field
