Students will create their own designs, using manual methods and digital programs. They will learn to use a variety of illustration tools. They will also create a Mini-Collection of original designs and research/select appropriate fabrics for their designs. One design will be selected, to be constructed in Fashion Design Collection II.

Students will build on their essential sewing skills, while learning new skills, including Industrial Sewing Machine operations. The Project for this course is a tailored Shirt/Blouse in a Cotton or Cotton-blend fabric. Through this project, students will learn custom construction techniques to achieve a professional-looking tailored Shirt/Blouse.

Students will learn about the different kinds of fibers, their properties and characteristics, wovens, non-wovens, stretch wovens and knits, basic fabric finishes; and the best end uses for the different fabrics.
